ROWLAND RELATIVES

Elmer Hinton wrote an article in DOWN TO EARTH entitled Jim Bob Rowland Just Likes to Talk. He said that Jim Bob and his brother talked all night, not because they hadn't seen one another in a while, but just because they liked to talk. The article stated that one time, Jim Bob walked and carried two bushels of corn on his shoulder to the mill to be ground Evidently, the mill was out of order, and he had to carry it back home. On the way home, he stopped to talk to Ivie Davis for an hour without ever putting down the corn. He loved to talk. Jim Bob was a farmer who lived for several years near Fruit Valley. Jim Bob, who was really James Robert Rowland, was born Feb. 6, 1886 and died in 1963. He was living in the 10th District at the time of his death and is buried, along with his wife, in the King Cemetery on Fruit Valley Road.

Jim Bob is descended from Thomas T. Rowland b. 1823 in Rutherford County TN who married Sept. 29, 1843 Elizabeth Smotherman who was born July 1, 1824 in Rutherford Co. TN. Photos of their tombstones are shown at Rowland Tombstones.

James Granvel Rowland, their son, was b. May 23, 1850 in Rutherford Co. TN and d. April 15, 1920 in Rutherford Co. TN. He married November 21, 1867 Paulina Jane Smotherman. Paulina was born Sept. 4, 1847 and died Aug. 9, 1933. James Granvel and Paulina Jane are buried in the Cemetery at Link. Their children along with James Robert "Jim Bob" Rowland include Mariah Josephine Rowland.

Mariah Josephine Rowland b. January 7, 1880 in Rutherford Co TN was last married to Alex Bumpus who was born about 1870. She was living in the home of her niece on Fruit Valley Road at the time of her death and is buried at the King Cemetery.
