Elijah Smotherman's Family

SMOTHERMAN ANCESTRY

Samuel Smithyman's family lived in the city of London, Middlesex County, during the reign of King George II, which began in 1714. He had three sons: Samuel, John, and Matthew. Samuel Smitherman was born in 1723 in the borough of Whitechapel, City of London, Middlesex County, England. His parents were Samuel and Phoebe Smithyman. A book has an entry that states that Samuel Smitherman, was sentenced to transport to the colonies. He was traveled on the ship "Justitia" leaving London May 18, 1744. Samuel had a son named John Smitherman b. abt. 1765 in VA who may have married Mary Barker. Their children were Abraham, Jesse, John G., Nancy, Lewis, Elijah, and Phoebe.

My Smotherman's

By now some had changed the spelling of their name to Smotherman. Elijah Smotherman b. 1794 married Nancy M. Leathers abt. 1818. Elijah left a will in which his wife and some of his children are named. This will and other sources indicate that two of his children were: Elbert A. and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Smotherman b. July 1, 1824 married Thomas T. Rowland Sept. 29, 1843.

Elbert A. Smotherman b. 1826 married Nancy Elmira Jane Woodson on March 11, 1845. One of their children was Paulina Jane b. Sept. 4, 1847 who married James Granvel Rowland on Nov. 21, 1867.

Another son of John Smitherman, Lewis Smotherman was b. 1793. Lewis married Mary Ann Williams Sept. 6, 1815 and one of their children was Francis who was born in 1821 and married Elizabeth West on Nov. 15, 1841. A child of this union: Mary Ann Smotherman b. 1845 married William Christopher Sudberry on May 19, 1866.
