![]() CHARLES BRANDON![]() Several Brandon families lived in South Carolina during the last half of the 18th Century.
My interest in the area is Charles and Sarah Cook Brandon and others who might have been associated with them. They lived along the Pacolet River in South Carolina during the time of the American Revolution. Charles Brandon was born in York Co. Pennsylvania on April 7, 1750 Old Style. This information was recorded in the family Bible, but Charles did not know what had happened to this record. One source (undocumented as far as I can tell) states that Charles's father was born in England and emigrated to North Carolina. I have found no proof of this. However, some of his descendants believe Charles's father was indeed from England. As for me, I believe that Charles's father immigrated from Ireland with other Brandon family members, because of the close association of the family with other Irish immigrants. He married Sarah Cook, whose parents, John and Sarah Fulton Cook, came from Ireland, and he spent much time with the Chesney's who were also from Ireland. First hand knowledge of Alexander Chesney can be found in his Journal.(Alexander Chesney married Jane Fulton, sister to Sarah Fulton Cook.) Alexander Chesney's Journal and other records show that Charles was living with his wife Sarah Cook early in 1773 in South Carolina. They had the following children: Mary, Jane, Sarah, Catherine, and a son who may have been named Christopher. He also had a child born in 1772 by the name of Nancy Brandon. She married John King. It has always been believed by the family that Nancy Magruder was the mother of Nancy Brandon. He married Nancy Magruder probably in North Carolina. Court records state that Charles was married twice. Further research needs to be done to prove when Charles and Nancy were actually married. Charles and his second wife had the following children: Hester, Margaret, and Elias Hiatt.
Was Charles a brother or cousin to the other Brandon's in the area? Kentucky records show Charles Brandon owning land and living in Christian County KY in 1800. He died in Bedford County Tennessee. LINKS
