INDEPENDENCE DAY

From The World Book Encyclopedia: John Adams said, "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore."


THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The Declaration of Independence ranks as one of the greatest documents in our nation's history. It expressed the colonies reasons for proclaiming their freedeom. The document blamed the British government for abuses, and it stated that all people have certain rights.

It can be divided into four parts: The Preamble; A Declaration of Rights; A Bill of Indictment; and A Statement of Independence.

The Preamble

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Right of Citizens

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...
